"What is it that gives downtown/South Street-based Philly metal acts that old-school hell-god-of-thunder sound? Vocalists who sound as if they’re straining to pee while singing opera. Thick ugly chords that meld the roar of the Amboy Dukes to Soundgarden. Drums that sound like they were recorded in the city’s trash compactor. I don’t know, but it’s meant as a compliment, since Philly metal faves Dandelion, Mama Volume and She Males all had that very sound. So does Betty Whitetrash. Old guitarist Jay Medley (pre-punk days old), drummer B. Bannon, bassist Bob Shame and vocalist Jeremy Hugo have a can’t-kill-us attitude that has seen them outlive all other contenders. It comes out in their music as a fearsome roar, a percussive chattering moan on tracks like "Hopes and Dreams" and "Imminent Destruction." But for all the loathing, Betty Whitetrash’s music is gloriously tacky with a lowbrow sense of humor. The echo-laden vocals and long intro on "Ace Space Case" ooze in and out like Jim Morrison blowing a slide trombone. "Miss Vicious" takes a sly poke at the "junkie girls" this band knows too well. And any metal act that could cover "Girls on Film" has got the wit to match its heaviness any day."
